Measuring Vaginal Responses Muscle tone and blood engorgement can be measured inside the vagina with the help of various instruments.

A. The Perineometer The firmness of vaginal muscles can be tested by an instrument invented by Dr. Kegel - the perineometer. It is basically a simple pressure gauge which measures vaginal muscle contractions. It is also used as biofeedback instrument for women who the training of these muscles. B. Vaginal Photoplethysmograph This instrument, when inserted into the vagina, measures the degree of blood engorgement by registering the color of the vaginal walls through a photoelectric cell. C. Combination Instrument (Photoplethysmograph and Myograph) This instrument can measure sexual excitement by simultaneously registering blood engorgement by registering color and muscle tone by registering electric muscle impulses.
